student with solar oven

Students in the Science Exploratory and Activities class head outside to test their builds. After obtaining results from several preliminary labs; absorption, reflection, insulation and direction the students applied their knowledge to the creation of building a solar oven.

The goal of the project is to build an oven using recyclable materials that has the ability to be greater than 2 times the outside air temperature. If the air temperature was 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit), the oven needs an inside temperature of greater than 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Celsius). The highest temperature reached by one of the students this year was 61 degrees Celsius (142 degrees Fahrenheit).

The data they collect is graphed and compared and then inserted into a class presentation.
