Applying to New West High School
Thank you for your interest in New West High School, the "best little high school in Wyoming"! We are a school of choice, which means that each of our students have chosen to apply, interview, and continue to remain enrolled at New West.
We serve area students in grades 9-12 up to age 21. Students living out-of-district (such as in Sheridan County) will also need to complete a District Enrollment Application. Applications are generally reviewed in the late spring/early summer for August enrollment and late fall for January enrollment.
Our application process consists of two components:
1) the online application form, which includes the student and parent/guardian questionnaires, and
2) an interview with our staff. During the interview, additional information may be requested from students or parents/guardians.
Student applications are reviewed by multiple New West staff, including our principal and counselor. Several variables are included in enrollment decisions including risk factors identified by the National Dropout Prevention Center.* These include (in no particular order):
Negative school attitude
Low ability level
Attendance/truancy
Behavior/discipline problems
Pregnancy
Drug abuse
Poor peer relationships
Friends that have dropped out
Illness/disability
Low self-esteem/self-efficacy
Low socioeconomic status
Dysfunctional home life
Lack of parental involvement
Low parental expectations
Ineffective parenting/abuse
High mobility (moving and/or changing schools frequently)
Credit deficiency
*The existence of one or more of these risk factors does not necessarily mean that a student cannot be successful in a traditional high school program, but each factor increases the risk that a student will drop out of high school.
It is vitally important to us that every area student is enrolled in the high school that best suits their needs, so application to our school does not guarantee acceptance. We are unable to consider incomplete applications.
